Alleviating loneliness

I have worked from home since March 2020 and found this difficult at times due to isolation. However I see my husband in the evening on his return from work. Others have no one especially the elderly and COVID-19 has meant they can no longer go out to day centres, theatres, cafes or meet friends and family. This has had a huge impact on their mental health and caused a surge in depression. Many elderly find using mobile phones difficult and struggle with tablets and laptops so zoom chat, or FaceTime is out of the question for them.

I volunteered with age connects to become a befriender. This made me realise how important contact and a chat is, and the difference it can make to someone‚’s life. However after the easing of the first lockdown many befriender volunteers returned to work and the elderly were left lonely again.
