The covid-19 pandemic has highlighted a significant weakness in the UK. With the approval and release of the Pfizer and Oxford vaccines for use on the public, we realise all too clearly that, while the UK is brilliant at developing vaccines at the academic level, we do not have sufficient technological capacity to manufacture vaccines on a large scale. This is a very serious deficiency now and for the short term. For the longer term, it is vital that we address this problem.
