mums in the economy

One in six childcare centres are closing – lack of funds. Pre-covid a huge amount of childcare was provided unpaid by grannies. Mums fill a large majority of disregarded and underpaid jobs in the workplace, mostly part-time because of childcare duties.

Even pre-covid most of them therefore could not afford the cost of childcare centres. Post covid a lot of the grannies will be dead, and therefore unavailable. So, despite all the government pressures for mums to work, they will not be able to, leaving a big hole in the economy.
