Opt in support for NHS

Throughout the Covid crisis people have been rightly been heaping praise onto the NHS but in conversations that I‚’ve had they also want to know what they could do that has a bigger impact than appreciation alone.

I would like to suggest an optional tax that would support the NHS alone. My proposal is that people could opt in to reducing their annual personal allowance for Income Tax by (say) £1000, the money raised by this should be ring-fenced for spending on front-line NHS services. I believe this would be simple and low cost to implement since the infrastructure already exists (HMRC already adjust allowances for things like cleaning uniforms), would require very little political collateral and would benefit both donors and recipient.
