Being confined to our homes, as a result of the pandemic and associated lockdowns, has undoubtedly renewed our appreciation for access to outside space, and highlighted the inequality that exists with regards such access. My suggestion is that government promotes the conversion of flat roofs into roof gardens, whether through subsidy or merely simplification of the application process required for planning permission.
As well as potentially providing people in urban tower blocks with access to green outside space, and panoramic views, it would also help towards mitigating climate change, through carbon capture and reduced water runoff; especially if millions around the country with flat roof extensions or garage roofs were to capitalise upon this initiative.
