Set up a UK mentoring / development scheme where to become a company director / senior management you have to agree to mentor / support either individuals or schools or both. Companies could be required to report in their annual financial statements or a separate report like Gender Pay Reports, the targets and how they performed. A traffic light system should be created so that it can be easily reviewed. This will show senior management / company directors giving something back to society and sharing their experience. Historically these type of schemes benefit those from better schools , families or companies. A nationwide scheme could benefit everyone. Let those with experience benefit those who dont have access to it. All without charging.
The how
1. One to one contact – remotely and obviously with people being DBS checked in the normal way. Sharing experiences and tips on how to develop
2. Group exercises. – remotely during COVID but then a commitment each month. This would give younger people access to the “great and the good” which have historically been very difficult to access. There are numerous coaching / mentoring organisations who could design something suitable and tailor it for different age groups / industries etc.
3. Creation of a database of networks whereby participants can access anyone who is participating from the mentor / coaching side if they are in an area of interest. This will enhance networking opportunities but also support the levelling up agenda of the Government. The scheme will ensure that everyone can benefit from “knowing someone” not just those from wealthy backgrounds or because they live in prosperous parts of the country.
4. A certificate of participation afterwards to show a certain amount of hours / sessions have been completed.
5. Annual prize ceremony, like Prince of Wales Trust, to give publicity to businesses and candidates…..
