Most people ordering on line do not require a next day delivery service. My suggestion is that anyone who does require next day delivery is charged £5 for a next day delivery. For those that don’t require next day delivery there will be no charge. Meanwhile the Delivery company will have to pay £5 for each delivery made. This will provide the delivery companies the incentive to save significant sums of money by aggregating their deliveries. In the pre Christmas period we received as many as 15 deliveries a week, none of which were urgent. If the proposals above are adopted then the delivery companies will very soon find a way of making one delivery of 15 items at a cost of £5 vs 15 deliveries costing them £75.
There will be a small cost to the consumer, but this will have the added benefit of making the High Street a little less uncompetitive. Perhaps the charges could also be used to help defray the cost of business rates on the High Street.
