Reintroduction of the post of ‘Education and Welfare Officers’ – EWO.

Well trained and experienced individuals working under the umbrella of Social Services, Police and schools, would develop an in-depth knowledge of pupils and families at risk in at least three schools in their local authority. They would detect early signs of abuse and school absence liaising with all the above organisations and families to help.

Financially it would be prudent –

Police time and expense would saved;

Schools would not be expected to deal with major social problems;

Social Services only brought in when appropriate;

Fewer suspensions of children from school.

The post of EWO would give employment to experienced people who may have lost their jobs due to Covid. Training would be financed by the Government and organised through Social Services.

This would lead to the early identification of vulnerable children and family situations. It would save money regarding Police and School time.
