Thousands of completely viable businesses, large and small have suffered and may go under due to no fault of their own. People and organisations need financial help. The cost of vaccines and medical equipment is colossal.
To protect our nation and be a strong leading light in the world going forward we could decide as a nation to spend, whatever it takes, to keep all viable businesses running, help everybody financially that need help and pay for top class health services and protection.
If all the political parties formed a working group that openly and honestly agreed what the cost has been and will be of fighting Covid-19 and then ring fenced that debt, for example for the next 75 years while its paid off, the burden of this debt could be settled over a long period of time without taxation harming those already financially hit.
This agreed, ring fenced debt, would then be separate to any current government and couldn’t be used as a tool to attack them. It would be a de-politicised national debt agreed on by all parties and kept separate.
Normal budgeting of the current government and of governments in the future would be open to scrutiny as is normal and right but the Covid-19, agreed debt, would be off the table. The country could recover and pay off this huge debt over time and under no political pressure.
