We’ve had a massive gap in careers provision since 2010, when the coalition scrapped Connexions. We urgently need one simple, coherent model on which all careers advice for all ages can be based. There is currently no one simple model. The Career Equation has massively speeded up career clarity for young people, professionals and those moving on from the workplace into retirement/third age. Our quick and practical toolkit is being used by teachers, careers advisers, coaches and mentors worldwide. We’d like to roll it out as a free online education programme for both advisers and for individuals themselves.

This simple equation has been turned into a book, published by McGraw Hill in April 2021, into online courses and webinars for students and professionals and into accredited training programmes for managers and coaches. If we all play our part in filling the gap, making these tools available to everyone, we will prevent an economic meltdown for many. In addition, having one model means that people could have a ‘careers passport’ that follows them throughout their career – helping them to define their strengths and their experiences in a consistent and replicable way. The Government could even create a Career Equation database, so that individuals career moves and key activities/learnings/skills could be tracked and managed centrally – saving recruiters, managers and referees time and energy.
We’ve been using these tools successfully for years with clients such as Amazon and Savills. In lockdown, we run workshops for teens who had their exams cancelled, using the Equation to help them think through their next steps. We ran free webinars attended by hundreds of members of the public, to help them think through their career plans and we delivered training to hundreds of managers and mentors to help them make use of the simple Equation tools. We know there is a demand and that this one tool works for everyone. We are currently piloting a digital course called Your Career Plan with the mums of mums net.
My background as a former Home Office fast streamer means I know how this can be scaled and replicated across Government departments and out into schools, job centres and employers.
