The Pandemic provides us with an opportunity to fix a problem. The problem is that everyone either aspires to university or not. Our society has evolved to resolve problems rather than to maximise potential. If you go to university you’re a success, if not you’re not going to change the world.
Look at the following:
1+1 = 2
2 + 2 = 4
3 + 3 = 5
4 + 4 = 8
5 + 5 = 10
Why did you focus on the 20% I failed in? Surely it would be better to focus on improving my 80% success?
Refocus our education and training system to identify, embrace and maximise individual strengths and weaknesses.
Steps:
1. Remove GCSE and A Level tests and replace them with psychometric evaluation. Use 2020/2021 as the catalyst for change.
2. Create a Citizen’s Agenda. What are you best suited to, to maximise your potential for society?
3. Engage industry with education in creating pathways. Prioritising public service careers and revitalising apprenticeship to become fit for the 21C and beyond. At the same time develop a university pathway for academic achievers who aspire to research.
4. Transform the majority of universities to become training and development centres. Centres for excellence ‘Citizenship Development Hubs’. Look to industry to fund this.
5. Fund research at our reduced number of universities to focus on maintaining the UKs position as a world leader. Feeding these with those people most suited to academic achievement.
6. Change the paradigm that universities are places where academic achievement is only equal in importance to having fun and growing up.
7. Communicate, communicate, communicate the beliefs that everyone has potential to contribute to society and that vocational training is every bit as important as a university education.
8. Relaunch ‘British Values’
