Replace unemployment benefits with a Basic Income

Under the current system of unemployment benefits it costs a lot of money in administration costs to pay for staff and buildings all over the country.

As we have seen with the pandemic throughout most of 2020, requiring claimants to attend the job centre is not necessary.

We should replace unemployment benefits with a Basic Income. No attending the job centre, no risk of sanctions, simply register online/over the phone and collect your Basic Income, which can be kept at the same amount as the current unemployment benefits amount.

This would drastically reduce the need for administration staff and buildings. I estimate a savings of around £500million a year if we cut the number of staff and buildings in half. We could easily cut many more, as most counties would only need a single office instead of having an office in most larger towns. Some counties may even consolidate their offices with neighbouring counties.
