Parliament is, still, the heart of government. It plays a significant part in holding the attention of government and, therefore, all of the endless layers of influence and activity that surround government. The Houses of Parliament, the workplace of MPs and Lords, is out of date, falling down and in need of replacement.
The solution is to build a new permanent home for Parliament in the North East of England eg Bradford or Middlesbrough – or even that destination of choice, Barnard Castle.
This would a) signal a commitment to levelling up nationally b) lead to a maor shift tof investment into deprived communities c) render the huge bill needed for modernisation of parliament more manageable and palatable and d) give the nation a real symbol of a new start in which we are all in it together.
