Before the pandemic there were already thousands of individuals who through retirement or finding spare time could contribute time to good causes. The call for volunteers during the Covid crisis has highlighted how many more people are prepared to give up their time to help out in an emergency. Response has been impressive with calls for help vastly oversubscribed so how do we harness this and build on it for the future? If this enthusiasm for taking social responsibility and helping others can be maintained when life returns to normal then the sense of local/national community spirit could be enhanced greatly in the longer term. Can we encourage more adults to make regular volunteering a must-have in their lives enabling the scaling up of projects at local, regional and national level. Wouldn’t it be great if we started to view our volunteer career with as much pride as our other achievements in life and on our social media profiles?
