What Build Back Better really means for the UK housing market

The UK‚’s legislative commitment to Zero Carbon 2050 is rightly applauded. Turning that commitment into reality will require bold initiatives followed through with real determination. As we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic and start rebuilding the UK economy in a post-Brexit world, government should think very carefully about what the phrase ‚’Build Back Better‚’ really means.

Various surveys seem to conclude that between 15% and 25% of current UK carbon emissions coming from housing. The retrofit challenge for existing housing stock is enormous, but we keep adding to that challenge by permitting new homes to be built that will themselves require retrofitting before 2050.

The UK‚’s role in hosting COP26 provides a fantastic opportunity to address this issue and demonstrate our global leadership in tackling the existential threats of climate change.
