There is clearly still a major issue concerning the ability of our motorways to carry traffic effectively and much has been achieved (at great expense) over the last decade with the managed or smart motorways. However there are other things which could be done to improve things. When travelling along a motorway everything is going smoothly until a HGV pulls out to overtake another and continues to crawl along until the manoeuvre is complete. During this time the road is effectively reduced from three to just two lanes.
